Welcome to the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Minority and Women’s Business Development Group (MWBDG) Website. This resource is for Procurement Professionals and ISM/MWBDG members who have an interest in minority and woman-owned business development (supplier diversity) as a sound purchasing strategy. We hope it provides you with information that will help you and your organization. This site also contains important information about the MWBDG, its structure and its mission, goals and objectives.

The MWBDG is one of a number of groups and forums within ISM. Its members share a common interest in supplier diversity; they recognize and value minority-owned and woman-owned business development as a sound business practice. It is the purpose of the MWBDG to promote the exchange of ideas and information as well as the discussion of issues and concerns of businesses within purchasing and supply chain management.

MWBDG acts as a resource center for ISM members and interested procurement professionals on minority business and women's business development issues. We sponsor seminars and workshops at ISM's Annual International Supply Management Conference or upon request. MWBDG board members are available as speakers for ISM affiliates, companies, or organizations interested in establishing a minority business development group or committee at the local level. The MWBDG also publishes a newsletter circulated to all ISM members who have indicated an interest in the Group.

We encourage you to browse this site and contact us if you have questions or need further information. Should you have an interest in becoming a member of the MWBDG, please contact our membership committee.

The Group was formed in 1986 as the Minority Business Development Group (MBDG) in the Boston, Massachusetts area, by a group of purchasing professionals who recognized a need to address minority business development issues within the purchasing profession. On February 9, 1987, the MBDG was officially sanctioned by the National Association of Purchasing Management as a fully operational national group with 35 members. Its first chairman was Charles J. McDonald, Jr. after whom the Minority Business Advocate Award was named. In May 2000, the name of the group was changed to Minority and Women’s Business Development Group. Currently the Group has a membership of over 500.
